Biography

Rajeev Muni is an accomplished vitreoretinal surgeon at St. Michael's Hospital, with a notable career in clinical research focused on randomized clinical trials for vitreoretinal surgical conditions. He obtained his medical degree from McMaster University in 2002 and completed his fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the University of Toronto in 2008. His extensive training also includes a fellowship in pediatric vitreoretinal surgery from the University of Southern California and a Master's degree in clinical epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Muni leads an active clinical research program, recently conducting the PIVOT randomized trial comparing pneumatic retinopexy versus pars plana vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed publications, with 50 published in 2023 alone, in some of the highest impact journals in the field. His contributions to ophthalmology have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the 2018 Eye Physicians and Surgeons Ontario Innovator of the Year Award, the inaugural 2021 Kreissig Award for Excellence in Retinal Surgery, the 2022 Rosario Brancato Retina Award from Italy, and multiple 2023 Presidential Honor Awards from the American Society of Retina Specialists.
