Dr. Rajendra Chitnis

Biography

Rajendra Chitnis is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages, University of Oxford. His research primarily focuses on Czech literature from the late nineteenth century to the present, with significant interests in Slovak and Russian fiction from the late Socialist period to the present. He has written extensively on the evolution of Czech, Russian, and Slovak literature, examining how these literatures responded to cultural and historical changes, especially following the fall of Communism. Chitnis is completing a monograph on modernity in the countryside within Czech literature from the 1890s to the 1960s. His teaching includes Czech and Slovak literature since the nineteenth century, alongside medieval literature and translation studies. He welcomes research student inquiries on Czech and Slovak literature in various cultural, historical, and socio-political contexts. He has supervised various doctoral and master's projects, focusing on Central European women's writing, the portrayal of medicine in inter-war literature, and the translation of Russian classics. Chitnis's scholarly contributions include monographs, edited volumes, and numerous articles in journals, reflecting his significant role in the study of Eastern European literatures.
