Dr. Rajesh Kharbanda

Biography

Rajesh Kharbanda is an Associate Professor in Cardiovascular Medicine and a Consultant Cardiologist at the Radcliffe Department of Medicine, University of Oxford. His research primarily focuses on understanding ischemia-reperfusion injury, particularly the mechanisms underlying remote preconditioning. He investigates heart muscle responses and blood vessel injury, with a specific interest in microcirculation. Kharbanda has developed various models to study ischemia-reperfusion injury in humans through ex-vivo and in-vivo techniques, as well as conducting clinical studies involving patients who have experienced heart attacks and are undergoing surgery. His work aims to elucidate the mechanisms of ischemia-reperfusion injury, which could lead to improved interventions and optimize the outcomes of reperfusion treatments. His research findings are relevant not only to cardiac health but also to brain health, as there are ongoing studies investigating the role of remote conditioning in patients afflicted by heart attacks. Kharbanda's current research includes examining the pathways involving adenosine in remote preconditioning and targeting microcirculation in heart attack treatments to enhance patient outcomes.
