Biography

Dr. Rajni Patel received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cambridge, England, in 1973. He currently holds the position of Distinguished University Professor and Tier-1 Canada Research Chair in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Additionally, he has a cross appointment in the Department of Surgery at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. Dr. Patel serves as the Director of Engineering at the Canadian Surgical Technologies & Advanced Robotics (CSTAR) research program, affiliated with the London Health Sciences Centre and Lawson Health Research Institute. He has published over 460 papers in refereed journals and conferences, with research interests that span robotics and mechatronics, particularly in surgical therapy, rehabilitation, and neurological movement disorders, as well as applications in space. His work includes haptics, teleoperation, systems control, and artificial neural networks. Dr. Patel is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and the Life Fellow status of IEEE, ASME (USA), IET (UK), and EIC (Canada). He has contributed to multiple editorial boards and has been instrumental in advancing research in medical robotics.
