Ralf Gellert is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Guelph. He obtained his MSc in 1994 and PhD in 1999 from Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany, specializing in Conversion Electron Moessbauer Spectroscopy. His professional journey includes roles as a research scientist at the University of Mainz and the Max-Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany, contributing to the development of miniaturized Moessbauer spectrometers for NASA's Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission and ESA's Beagle mission. Since 2001, his research has focused on the Alpha-Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) utilized in the NASA MER rovers and ESA's Rosetta comet mission. Gellert joined the University of Guelph in 2005 and has since improved the APXS instrument selected for the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, collaborating closely with the Canadian Space Agency. His research includes nuclear spectroscopy methods for planetary exploration, the development of hardware and software for future missions, and the analysis of radiation sources and X-ray detector technologies. Gellert has received several awards for his contributions, including the NASA Outstanding Public Leadership Medal and ESA Award for his role in the development of the APXS for the Rosetta mission.
