Biography

Ralf Gellert is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Guelph. He received his MSc in 1994 and PhD in 1999 from the Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany, where he specialized in Conversion Electron Moessbauer Spectroscopy. Following his education, he worked as a research scientist at the University of Mainz and the Max-Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany, contributing to the development of a miniaturized Moessbauer spectrometer that was utilized in NASA's Mars Exploration Rover mission and the ESA Beagle mission. Since joining the University of Guelph in 2005, Gellert has focused his research on the development of the Alpha-Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) for the NASA Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity and has collaborated with the Canadian Space Agency. His research emphasizes the design and application of nuclear spectroscopy methods for planetary exploration and involves the development of hardware and software for future missions. Gellert has led the operation and data analysis of the APXS instruments onboard Mars rovers, contributing to geological interpretations at multiple landing sites on Mars. He has been recognized for his contributions with several awards, including the NASA Outstanding Public Leadership Medal in 2013. Gellert continues to investigate possible improvements to APXS instruments and collaborates with various universities to enhance the analysis quality of chemical and mineral data from Martian exploration missions.
