Biography

Ralph Evins is an Associate Professor and Director of the Graduate Program in Civil Engineering at the University of Victoria. He holds a Master of Engineering from Imperial College London and a Doctor of Engineering from the University of Bristol. His research focuses on building energy use simulation, energy system optimization, and energy hubs within urban environments. Evins is particularly interested in computational problem-solving in the domain of energy systems, particularly how optimization approaches like genetic algorithms can be utilized to navigate complex design spaces. His work encompasses various scales, from individual buildings to city-wide systems, guided by systems thinking and a holistic analysis of interconnectivity in energy usage and systems design. Evins is also involved in the development of the Holistic Urban Energy Simulation (HUES) platform, which integrates numerous variables affecting energy performance. His commitment to advancing knowledge exchange between academic and commercial sectors drives many of his projects.
