Dr. Ralph Knowles

Biography

Ralph Knowles is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Architecture with over 40 years of teaching experience. He is a distinguished author, having written seven books and more than 50 articles. His significant contributions to the field have been recognized with the American Institute of Architects’ Medal for Research and the USC Associates Award for Teaching Excellence. Knowles's work has also been prominent in research related to solar access in urban design, particularly through the development of the Solar Envelope, which is a zoning strategy aimed at enhancing urban solar access. His book, "Sun Rhythm Form," received the Phi Kappa Phi Scholarly Book Award, further establishing his expertise in passive solar design. In addition to his academic accomplishments, he has been honored with the Passive Solar Pioneer Award by the American Solar Energy Society. His latest publication, "Ritual House: Drawing Nature’s Rhythms in Architecture and Urban Design," delves into the relationship between nature's rhythms and life’s rituals, proposing a new aesthetic in architecture. Knowles's dedication to teaching and research has greatly influenced the quality of life and energy conservation in design.
