Biography

Ramón E. Soto-Crespo is a Professor in the Department of English at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He served as Director of the Latino Studies Program at the State University of New York at Buffalo from 2002 to 2012. Soto-Crespo has been awarded the Lorraine Lawton Prize for Excellence in Comparative Literature and the award for Excellence in History. He is the author of 'Mainland Passage: Cultural Anomaly Puerto Rico' (2009), which received an Honorable Mention for the Modern Language Association Prize in United States Latino/Chicano Literary and Cultural Studies, and 'White Trash Menace Hemispheric Fiction' (2020). His most recent book, 'Neobugarrón: Heteroflexibility, Neoliberalism, Latin/o American Sexual Practice' was published in 2023. Soto-Crespo also serves as co-editor for the Journal of Modern Literature and has contributed to various peer-reviewed journals, namely American Literary History, Atlantic Studies, and Contemporary Literature. He has received fellowships and grants from several institutions, which have supported his research interests including American Studies, Gender/Sexuality Studies, Latina/o Studies, Post-Colonial Studies, and Theory & Criticism.
