Biography

Rande Kostal is a Professor at Western University Faculty of Law, where he has been a faculty member since 1988. He specializes in Legal History and Torts, focusing on modern Anglo-American legal history. He has authored several significant works, including 'Law English Railway Capitalism: 1825-1875' and 'Jurisprudence Power: Victorian Empire Rule of Law' both published by Oxford University Press. His latest monograph, 'Laying Law: American Legal Revolutions in Occupied Germany and Japan', was published in 2019 by Harvard University Press and won the Philip Reid Prize from the American Society for Legal History in 2020. His academic contributions also include various refereed articles on topics such as Canadian Tort Law and legal reconstruction in Nazi Germany. Kostal is currently completing a book project on the social history of Canadian tort law litigation from 1945 to 1995, collaborating with Erika Chamberlain. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from Western University, a Master of Arts (M.A.) from McMaster University, and a Doctorate (Ph.D.) from Oxford University.
