Biography

Randy Diehl received his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Minnesota and is a Professor in the Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. His research interests encompass psycholinguistics, cognition, speech perception, and auditory category learning. Diehl's work is characterized by innovative methods including acoustic analysis of natural speech, perceptual identification and discrimination of both synthetic speech stimuli and analogous non-speech stimuli, as well as computational modeling of the representation of speech sounds. Additionally, he focuses on auditory nerve estimation and the assessment of auditory distances between sounds, employing simulations of preferred speech sound inventories using criteria for maximal auditory distance. Diehl is currently applying Bayesian statistical decision theory to analyze tasks that involve learning novel auditory categories, including both non-speech and language sound categories.
