Biography

Randy Hertz joined NYU School of Law in 1985 to help establish a new clinical tenure track program. He graduated from Stanford Law School in 1979 and has an undergraduate degree from Carleton College in 1976. Hertz served as articles symposium editor of the Law Review and clerked for Robert F. Utter, chief justice of the Washington Supreme Court. He has experience working with the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia, where he handled criminal trials and appeals. Hertz is the editor-in-chief of NYU Law's Clinical Law Review, a scholarly journal focusing on clinical legal education. He has co-authored a two-volume book on habeas corpus, a resource frequently cited by practicing lawyers and judges. Hertz also collaborates with University Professor Anthony Amsterdam and Professor Martin Guggenheim on a trial manual for defense lawyers in juvenile delinquency cases. As a faculty director, he oversees the law school’s Derrick Bell lecture series on Race and American Society. Hertz teaches courses in the Juvenile Defender Clinic, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, and Criminal Litigation, equipping students with the skills to navigate the complexities of legal defense.
