Dr. Rania Awaad

Biography

Rania Awaad, M.D., is a Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine and the Director of the Stanford Muslim Mental Health & Islamic Psychology Lab. She also serves as the Associate Division Chief of Public Mental Health in the Population Sciences Section and Co-Chief of the Diversity Section in Adult Psychiatry. Dr. Awaad is a prominent figure in Muslim mental health, having established several clinics that address the specific mental health needs of Muslim communities. She has created tailored educational programs for clinicians and religious leaders, and her work has been recognized at national convenings, including invitations to present at events hosted by Presidents Obama and Biden. Her research interests lie in community-based participatory research, psychological frameworks for mental health, and integrating Islamic principles into clinical practice. With extensive teaching experience, Dr. Awaad instructs courses on Islamic Psychology and the intersections of culture, religion, and mental health.
