Biography

Raoul Frese, born in 1969 in Amsterdam, studied physics at the University of Amsterdam and obtained his PhD at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He has served as a postdoctoral researcher at Twente University, specializing in nanobiophysics, and he has led his own research group in biophysics at Leiden University after receiving a young investigator grant from the Dutch Science Foundation (NWO-veni). Frese has also worked at Rutgers University in New Jersey, USA, as a research associate in the lab of Bob Niederman and has garnered an experienced investigator grant from NWO (Vidi). His current role at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam involves leading a team focused on biohybrid solar cells, exploring the interconnection of photosynthetic materials and (semi-)conducting substrates for solar energy harvesting. Frese engages in transdisciplinary research methodologies, including artscience, collaborating with artists and designers. He is actively investigating high-resolution imaging protocols for photosynthetic membranes, studying the thermodynamic properties of protein domain formation and their effects on membrane organization. His teaching responsibilities include coordinating a Master's track in Science Energy Sustainability, emphasizing physics and joint degrees with Universiteit van Amsterdam. Frese's work furthers the understanding of biosensors detecting herbicides and the corresponding disruptions in photocurrent in electrochemical cells.
