Biography

Raquel Ormella has a diverse artistic practice that includes video, installation, textiles, and creating zines. Her work investigates art that encourages political consciousness and social action, often questioning national identity and the environment. She completed her PhD in 2015, which examined human interactions with urban birds, and her dissertation analyzed contemporary Australian artworks incorporating living animals as performers or props. Ormella is recognized as a high-profile national and international artist. Her exhibitions include the 2015 Asian Art Biennial at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, the 2013 California-Pacific Triennial, the 2010 Aichi Triennial in Japan, and the 2008 Sydney Biennale among others. She has participated in significant group exhibitions, including Material Politics at the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane and New Australian Art at the Gallery NSW, Sydney. Additionally, she has held solo exhibitions at Milani Gallery in Brisbane and Artspace in Sydney. Ormella served on the Artists Advisory Board at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Australia, from 2017 to 2018 and was a board member of the Australian National Capital Artists inc. from 2019 to 2020.
