Raquel Sitcheran received her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Columbia University in 1992 and completed her PhD in Physiology and Genetics at the University of California, San Francisco in 2000 under Dr. Keith Yamamoto. She undertook her postdoctoral work with Dr. Albert Baldwin at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and was a research associate at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center from 2006 to 2009 before joining the faculty at Texas A&M University's Naresh K. Vashisht College of Medicine in September 2009. Her research focuses on aggressive tumors, particularly high-grade gliomas and their invasive capabilities. Sitcheran investigates the role of NF-κB regulatory proteins in cancer cell behavior, particularly concerning motility and invasive potential. She employs interdisciplinary approaches including cell imaging, in vitro 3-D invasion assays, biochemistry, and animal models to explore NF-κB de-regulation in cancer. Her lab has established the critical role of NF-κB-inducing kinase (NIK) and its expression in brain tumors, particularly regarding how it regulates the migratory and invasive potential of glioma cells, while also probing NIK's localization in mitochondria and its contribution to cancer progression.
