Biography

Professor Ravi Ravichandran is a leading expert in the field of aerospace engineering, with extensive research focusing on deformation failure materials, dynamic behavior, wave propagation, micro/nano mechanics, composites, active materials, and biomaterials cell mechanics. He earned his Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Madras in 1981, followed by two Master of Science degrees in Solid Mechanics Structures and Applied Mathematics from Brown University in 1983 and 1984, respectively. Ravichandran joined Caltech in 1990 as an Assistant Professor and progressed to Associate Professor in 1995, before becoming a full Professor in 1999. Notably, he has held significant leadership positions within the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories at Caltech, serving as Director from 2009 to 2015 and Division Chair from 2015 to 2021. His expertise and insights into the dynamic aspects of materials behavior contribute greatly to the field and have had a lasting impact on aeronautics and materials science education and research.
