Biography

Professor Guruswami Ravichandran specializes in the study of deformation failure of materials and their dynamic behaviors. His research encompasses a variety of advanced topics, including wave propagation, micro and nano mechanics, as well as the properties of composites and active materials. He also focuses on biomaterials and cell mechanics, applying experimental mechanics to these fields. With an extensive academic background, he earned his B.E. degree from the University of Madras in 1981, followed by multiple Sc.M. degrees from Brown University, and a Ph.D. completed in 1987. Professor Ravichandran has held various esteemed positions, including Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at Caltech, before becoming a full Professor in 1999. His leadership roles include serving as the Division Chair and Director of the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories, reflecting his significant contributions to the field of engineering and applied sciences. He has been recognized with the title of John E. Goode, Jr. Professor and awarded the Booth Leadership Chair.
