Dr. Ravi Thiara

Biography

Ravi Thiara is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Warwick and serves as the Director of the Centre for the Study of Safety and Well-being (SWELL). With over 25 years of experience, he conducts national and international research that significantly contributes to policy and practice in the field of gendered violence and social change. His research primarily focuses on gendered violence, intersectionality, and the experiences of marginalized communities including racialized groups and those with disabilities. He explores various dimensions of domestic and sexual violence, post-separation violence, and the impacts of mental health and well-being. Thiara has authored and edited several influential publications, including works addressing the complexities of violence against women, particularly in South Asian and ethnic minority contexts. His recent projects involve strategic reviews and evaluations around gender violence, in collaboration with organizations such as ESRC and Imkaan. He is actively involved in teaching courses related to gender violence and has supervised PhD students exploring wide-ranging topics in this area.
