Ray Cas is an Emeritus Professor within the School of Geosciences at Monash University and a Visiting Professor at CODES, University of Tasmania. His research focuses on physical volcanology and clastic sedimentology, specifically the dynamic processes involved in both modern and ancient volcanic and volcano-sedimentary systems. Cas is internationally recognized for his work in understanding explosive and effusive eruption processes, the transportation and dispersal of erupted products, and the hazards posed by volcanic eruptions. He has led a research team comprising postdoctoral researchers and students investigating contemporary volcanic provinces across various global locations including Japan, New Zealand, Italy, and the Canary Islands. He is the founder of the Monash Volcanology Research Group (MONVOLC), which actively collaborates with the mining industry to enhance the understanding of volcanic host rock characteristics and their implications for mineral deposits. Additionally, Ray conducts an annual industry short course on volcanic processes, a program he established in 1982. His contributions to volcanology have been recognized through his role as President of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) from 2011 to 2015. He is dedicated to integrating his research with public understanding and has a keen interest in environmental issues related to sustainable development goals.
