Biography

Ray Lahiri is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Classics at the University of Washington. He holds a Ph.D. in Classics and Comparative Literature from Yale University, which he is set to complete in 2024. He also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Classical Studies and Comparative Literature from the University of Pennsylvania in 2017. Lahiri's research focuses on ancient Greek and Roman historical writing, probing the distinctive forms of political thought as expressed in ancient historiography. His scholarship addresses the works of notable authors such as Herodotus, Polybius, Livy, Josephus, Tacitus, and Procopius. Beyond historiography, Lahiri explores the issues of literary style, counterfactuals, exemplarity in Roman culture, and the literary history of Africa within the Roman Empire, as well as the history of ancient Persia and the Iranian languages. In his leisure time, he enjoys playing guitar and is a devoted supporter of the Arsenal Football Club.
