Biography

Ray Mentzer serves as the Executive Director of the Purdue Process Safety & Assurance Center, overseeing a ten-year-old center with over 20 company sponsors and conducting approximately 25 process safety-related research projects each year. He teaches a rigorous chemical process safety course to around 170 senior undergraduate and graduate students within the Department of Chemical Engineering. With 28 years of experience in oil and gas operations at ExxonMobil, Dr. Mentzer has held major project design, financial planning, public affairs, and safety-related roles. He previously joined the Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety Center at Texas A&M University, where he taught senior-level Chemical Process Safety and Oil & Gas Processing courses and supervised graduate students on research dedicated to process safety management, risk assessment, and safety culture. Dr. Mentzer is actively involved in various industry associations, including the American Chemistry Council, American Petroleum Institute, and the UK Oil & Gas Association, with a focus on LNG safety.
