Dr. Rayid Ghani

Biography

Rayid Ghani is a computer scientist interested in the application of large-scale AI, Machine Learning, and Data Science to address significant public policy and social challenges. His research focuses on utilizing these technologies in a fair and equitable manner, collaborating with governments and non-profit organizations across various policy domains including health, criminal justice, education, public safety, economic development, and urban infrastructure. He is passionate about teaching practical data science and has initiated the Data Science for Social Good Fellowship, which aims to train computer scientists, statisticians, and social scientists worldwide to work on data science problems that foster social impact. Before joining Carnegie Mellon University, Rayid was the Chief Scientist for the Obama 2012 Election Campaign, where he concentrated on data, analytics, and technology to effectively target and influence voters, donors, and volunteers. Currently, he serves as the Founding Director of the Center for Data Science and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon, and holds a position as a Senior Fellow at the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago.
