Biography

Ray Goldsworthy received a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Kentucky in 1997 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Health Sciences Technology from Harvard University in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2005. After completing his doctoral studies, Goldsworthy led development teams at Sensimetrics Corporation where he designed signal processing strategies for cochlear implants and hearing aids, providing auditory rehabilitation software to assist individuals with hearing loss. He joined the University of Southern California as an Associate Professor of Otolaryngology in January 2014. As a cochlear implant user, he is passionate about the interplay of auditory experience, auditory perception, and medical bionics to enhance the lives of individuals with hearing loss. His research combines psychoacoustics, signal processing, and auditory rehabilitation, particularly focusing on cochlear implant technology. Goldsworthy's work examines the fundamental limits of auditory resolution and speech recognition and provides a basis for quantifying auditory capacity. His signal processing research looks at strategies inspired by the dynamic processes of healthy hearing, including spatial beamformers and cochlear implant stimulation strategies.
