Dr. Raymond Ng

Biography

Raymond Ng is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia. He earned his B.Sc. (Hons) from the University of British Columbia in 1986, followed by an M.Math. from the University of Waterloo in 1988, and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1992. He began his academic career as an Assistant Professor at UBC, advancing to Associate Professor in 1997, and achieving his current status as Professor in 2002. His research interests primarily include data mining, with a focus on the development of tools that enhance the user experience during the knowledge discovery process. He aims to create a balance between computational and human inputs in data mining, ensuring that the complexities of large databases can be navigated effectively. Ng also focuses on bioinformatics, developing tools that assist in understanding genomic and biomedical data, particularly in cancer research. Additionally, he explores multimedia data management, providing support for visual-based data forms, including images and videos, which have important applications in surveillance and entertainment.
