Biography

Raymond S. Niaura is a psychologist with expertise in tobacco dependence treatment and substance use addiction. His research focuses on the biobehavioral substrates of tobacco dependence, as well as factors influencing the trajectories of tobacco use among adolescents and young adults. Niaura evaluates behavioral and pharmacological treatments for tobacco cessation, with a particular interest in addressing public health disparities affecting disadvantaged populations. He has served as the Director of Science Training at the Schroeder Institute for Tobacco Research and Policy Studies, where he oversaw pre- and post-doctoral training programs. Niaura has previously held academic positions and conducted research at prominent institutions including Brown University, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Georgetown Medical Center, and the University of Maryland. He has published over 400 peer-reviewed articles and is involved with several professional organizations, including serving as President of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco. Niaura has been a Deputy Editor for Nicotine and Tobacco Research and has received numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health and various foundations.
