Biography

Rebecca Berrens is an academic specializing in Biochemistry, focusing on the molecular mechanisms of locus-specific transposable elements expression and their role in developmental gene regulation. Her research investigates the impact of transposable elements, which occupy a significant portion of the mammalian genome, on gene expression through their regulatory sequences. Berrens has developed a novel single-cell long-read RNA sequencing method, termed CELLO-seq, which enables the assessment of transposable element expression at the individual loci level within single cells. This innovative technique has led to the identification of thousands of LINE1 loci, with 25 of them deemed potentially important for development. Berrens's work combines advanced technologies including CELLO-seq, epigenetics, spatial chromosome organization, and computational biology, to study the heterogeneity of transposable element expression and understand the developmental regulators of gene expression. She is actively seeking to fill vacancies within her lab for further research collaborations.
