Biography

Emerita Professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania, Rebecca Bushnell has a distinguished career in Early Modern Literature, Drama, and Theatre. She received her BA from Swarthmore College, an MA from Bryn Mawr College, and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Princeton University. Over the years, she has published several monographs including 'Prophesying Tragedy: Sign and Voice in Sophocles' Theban Plays' (1988), 'Tragedies and Tyrants: Political Thought in the Theatre of the English Renaissance' (1990), and 'Green Desire: Imagining Early Modern English Gardens' (2003). As a scholar, her interests lie in Early Modern Literature, drama, the environmental humanities, and the history of material texts. In addition to her teaching responsibilities at the University of Pennsylvania, she has held various administrative roles including Associate Dean of Humanities and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Bushnell has been recognized with several awards including the ACLS Research Fellowship and the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching. She served as the President of the Shakespeare Association of America and is known for her innovative work in creating a virtual version of the Furness Shakespeare Library at the University.
