Biography

Rebecca Freund is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge, and a Parry-Anderson Fellow at Downing College. Her research focuses on public law, with a particular interest in the history of public law and how governance during the British Empire has shaped fundamental principles of public law in Britain. Her doctoral thesis, titled 'Empire Emergency: Reverberations of British Empire Authorisation under the Internment Defence Realm Acts', examined the influence of British imperial governance practices on the regulation of authorized internment during World War I. She is also interested in contemporary issues surrounding constitutional, administrative, and human rights law, especially in the context of emergencies. Recently, she served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at King's College London, working on a global project that mapped legal responses to Covid-19, as well as researching the implications of Covid-19 on the right to protest. In her teaching, Rebecca covers Constitutional Law and Human Rights Law as part of the Law Tripos and Legislation LLM programs.
