Biography

Rebecca Merkelbach is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Scandinavian Studies at the University of Tübingen. She has a rich academic background, having completed her Ph.D. in the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic at the University of Cambridge. Her research interests lie at the intersection of narratological and cultural studies within late medieval Scandinavian literature. Merkelbach's work focuses on narrative worlds, world-building, and the narratives' representation of gender and emotion. She has been involved in the DFG-funded project 'The Sagas: New Reading “Post-Classical” Sagas Icelanders', which explores the construction of characters and social interactions within these narratives, and aims to situate them within their socio-cultural contexts. Her recent publications include the monograph 'Story, World, Character Late Medieval Íslendingasögur: Rogue Sagas', which is set to be released in June 2024, alongside various articles and edited volumes that contribute to the ongoing discourse in Old Norse-Icelandic literature.
