Biography

Rebecca Schneider is a Professor in the Department of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University. Her academic work is centered on performance studies, decolonial methods, and media arts. Engaging with Black Feminist Thought and Indigenous postcolonial studies, she has authored several acclaimed books, including 'Explicit Body Performance' and 'Performing Remains: Art War Theatrical Reenactment,' which was recognized with the Notable Book Award by the American Theatre and Drama Society in 2011. Schneider's scholarly contributions comprise more than fifty essays published in various journals and anthologies, addressing themes such as performance art, media, and cultural politics. She has served as a Distinguished Professor at Queen Mary University of London and held a Mercator Fellowship at Goethe University in Frankfurt. Schneider's research has been generously supported by grants from the Mellon Foundation and the Guggenheim Foundation, with current projects exploring gesture, media, and historical narratives. In addition to her writing, she has collaborated with numerous artists and institutions, including the British Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, to deliver lectures and engage in discourse on contemporary performance practices.
