Rebecca Schulman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, with secondary appointments in Chemistry and Computer Science. She is the Kent Gordon Croft Investment Management Faculty Scholar and a member of various institutes, including NanoBioTechnology, Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute, and the Chemistry-Biology Interface Program. Schulman is currently the co-director of the Passport Future Technology Leadership program for PhD students. Her research focuses on intelligent adaptive biomolecular materials and nanostructures, leveraging concepts from materials science, biochemistry, and soft matter physics to develop dynamic biomaterials and smart sensors. Her lab utilizes DNA nanotechnology for designing complex molecular self-assembly processes, leading to the creation of self-assembling molecular circuits and autonomous soft micro-robots. Schulman has been awarded multiple fellowships and awards for her contributions to the field, including the AIMBE Fellowship Award, Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowship Award, and the NSF CAREER Award. She obtained her bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1999 and her PhD in Computation and Neural Systems from the California Institute of Technology in 2007. She has also completed postdoctoral studies in Computer Science and Physics.
