Biography

Rebecca Seligman is a medical psychological anthropologist focusing on transcultural psychiatry and the study of mental health from a cross-cultural perspective. Her research interests involve a critical examination of the social, political, and economic forces affecting the experience and distribution of mental and physical illness, with an emphasis on the physical processes and mechanisms that become embodied. Seligman is particularly interested in the relationships between stress, social disadvantage, cultural models of selfhood, and outcomes related to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), dissociation, somatization, diabetes, and depression. She explores current neurobiological research on these phenomena and has investigated the connection between mental health and religious participation in northeastern Brazil. Seligman's current research focuses on mental and physical health disparities among Mexican Americans, specifically the relationship between negative emotional experiences and diabetes management. She aims to examine the sociocultural influences on how Mexican American youth conceptualize their emotions and experiences with mental health care. Her recent publications include the book "Possessing Spirits, Healing Selves: Embodiment and Transformation in Afro-Brazilian Religion."
