Biography

Rebecca Sockbeson is a member of the Penobscot Indian Nation in Indian Island, Maine, with ties to the Waponahki Confederacy and the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation in Alberta, Canada. As a political activist and scholar, she graduated from Harvard University with a master's degree in education and earned her PhD in Educational Policy Studies from the University of Alberta, specializing in Indigenous Peoples Education. Her research focuses on Indigenous knowledge mobilization and its benefits to Indigenous communities, promoting Aboriginal healing through language and culture, anti-racism, and decolonization. Dr. Sockbeson's scholarly contributions extend to significant academic awards, including the University of Alberta Human Rights Teaching Award in 2013 for her coordination of the compulsory Aboriginal Education course. Her creative work, including the poem “Hear Concrete Beating Drum,” was featured in a permanent public art installation in Edmonton. Sockbeson has published extensively on Indigenous education and methodology, contributing to various academic journals and collaborative research projects aimed at advancing Indigenous knowledge and policy development. Currently, she serves as a professor at the University of Alberta, actively engaged in research and teaching in Indigenous knowledge and education.
