Rebecca Theophanous, MD, MHSc, FAEMUS, is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Duke University Hospital and the VA ED Emergency Ultrasound Program Director. She is actively involved in clinical ultrasound education, teaching residents and students, performing weekly ultrasound image reviews, and presenting advanced ultrasound topics monthly. Her first-author publications focus on the diagnostic utility of 3D ultrasound in assessing ocular complaints, and she has developed a point-of-care ultrasound implementation intervention for VA clinicians, funded by the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Foundation. She completed a Master of Health Sciences degree through Duke’s Clinical Research Training Program and has served as the site Principal Investigator for the Reason3 POCUS cardiac arrest trial. Her recent studies involve the implementation and testing of POCUS simulation-training methods, resident faculty development, and competency testing. As an AAEM-EUS councilor, she leads the SCUF Education fellowship curriculum subcommittee and has presented research-based talks at national conferences. Additionally, she is a reviewer for multiple medical journals, including the Journal of Ultrasound Medicine.
