Dr. Rebekah Modrak

Biography

Rebekah Modrak is an artist, writer, and educator focusing on the intersections of art, activism, and critical design. She employs her internet-based artworks to critically analyze brand messaging and consumer culture. As the creator of Re Made Co., she critiques appropriation and revitalization of working-class identities through a faux online company. Her project RETHINK SHINOLA challenges marketing narratives surrounding the White savior myth. Modrak is the co-editor of "Radical Humility: Essays Ordinary Acts" (Belt 2021), which features contributions from twenty writers exploring themes of humility in relation to power and institutions. She has authored the book "Reframing Photography" (Routledge 2011) and various articles addressing the relationships between brand strategies, gender, race, and cultural identity. Modrak serves as a Professor at the Stamps School of Art at the University of Michigan, holding both a BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and an MFA from Syracuse University's Department of TransMedia.
