Biography

Regina García-Méndez is an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University in the Whiting School of Engineering, where she embarked on her academic career in September 2023. She completed her Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering at UVG in Guatemala, graduating Summa Cum Laude, followed by a Master's degree in Materials Science Engineering from Michigan State University. Dr. García-Méndez earned her Ph.D. in Materials Science Engineering from the University of Michigan and later pursued a post-doctoral research fellowship at Cornell University. Her research focuses on advanced materials characterization, materials chemistry, and materials processing science, particularly aimed at addressing energy and environmental challenges through scalable energy storage and electrocatalysis technologies. She specializes in synthesizing and functionalizing inorganic materials in solid-state systems and has developed a multi-disciplinary approach, employing advanced X-ray and neutron scattering, electron microscopy, and molecular chemical analysis techniques. Apart from her research, she is dedicated to training future engineers and scientists and participates actively in academic service, currently serving as Chair of the Early Career Researcher Board for Oxford Open Energy and as an Associate Editor for the Journal of the American Ceramic Society. Additionally, she is a member of the internal advisory committee for the Materials Characterization Processing Center at Johns Hopkins University.
