Biography

Regina Schwartz (Ph.D. University of Virginia) teaches seventeenth-century literature, with a focus on Milton, Hebrew Bible, philosophy literature, and religion literature. Her publications include "Remembering Repeating: Biblical Creation Paradise Lost" (1988), which won the James Holly Hanford prize, and "Book Text: Bible Literary Theory" (1990). Schwartz has also authored "Desire in the Renaissance: Psychoanalysis and Literature" (1994), "Postmodern Bible" (1995), and "Transcendence: Philosophy, Literature, Theology Approach" (2004). Her significant work, "Curse Cain: Violent Legacy Monotheism" (1997), explores identity and violence in the Hebrew Bible and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Her recent book, "Sacramentality at the Dawn of Secularism: God Left the World," published by Stanford, is part of the series "Cultural Memory in the Present" (2007). Schwartz has served as Chair of the Modern Language Association's Religion Literature Division and President of the Milton Society of America. She is a co-Director of both the Newberry Milton Seminar and the "Academy for Advanced Study of Renaissance." Her work has included various speaking engagements at prestigious events and institutions. Schwartz specializes in Literature & Ethics, Early Modern Literature, Critical Theory, and Classical & Biblical Literature.
