Biography

Mr. Lifset is a Research Scholar and Resident Fellow in Industrial Ecology at Yale School of the Environment, where he also serves as the Founding Editor of the Journal of Industrial Ecology. His research and teaching focus on the application of industrial ecology to novel problems, specifically in areas such as extended producer responsibility (EPR), resource material efficiency, environmental impacts of the digital economy, and the development of a circular economy. He is a member of the United Nations International Resource Panel and serves on the editorial board of the journal Waste Biomass Valorisation. In 2015, he was awarded the Society Prize by the International Society for Industrial Ecology and chaired the Gordon Research Conference on Industrial Ecology. Mr. Lifset has advised organizations including the U.S. EPA and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). His interests include exploring the intellectual productivity and practical value of tools and frameworks emerging in the field of industrial ecology. He is particularly focused on the efficacy of EPR policies, product design changes, and environmental impacts arising from consumer activities. Mr. Lifset works closely with the Environmental Law Institute and the University of California, Berkeley to catalyze research on the digital economy's impacts. He teaches courses on Waste Materials Management and participates in curricular design for Industrial Environmental Management.
