Professor Reinhall is a world-renowned expert in nonlinear dynamical systems, acoustics, and biomechanics with a focus on the development of biomedical devices. Fifteen years ago, he turned his attention to collaborative research with a strong emphasis on health. He has led successful collaborations with the UW Medical School, VA Hospital Seattle DC, and non-profit industrial partners such as the Seattle Institute for Cardiac Research, Cardiac Science, and Medtronic. These collaborations have resulted in research applications that include enhanced new devices for the treatment of diabetes, early detection of cardiac arrhythmia, and cancer. His non-biomedical collaborative research covers areas including manufacturing, noise vibration control, and human-robotic interactions. As Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department, he envisioned creating large interdisciplinary collaborative research endeavors, placing the highest priority on health-related research. He has worked to bridge the gap between Engineering and Medicine by establishing the UW's Engineering Innovation in Health Program and the Boeing Advanced Research Center, focusing on automated assembly in confined spaces. His research discoveries have led to 24 patents and UW startups, significantly impacting the engineering field as well as aquatic wildlife protection through the development of new pile design technology used in marine construction.
