Remko Uijlenhoet is a Professor of Hydrology and Water Resources at Delft University of Technology. He received his MSc degree in Hydrology and Water Resources in 1990 and completed his PhD in Hydrometeorology in 1999 at Wageningen University. Remko's research primarily focuses on measurement and parameterization of space-time variability in rainfall using ground-based remote sensing techniques, as well as the development of opportunistic sensing techniques for novel applications in hydrological science. His research group has applied microwave links from commercial cellular communication networks for rainfall monitoring, allowing for near real-time assessment of rainfall dynamics across densely populated areas. Moreover, his team pioneered the use of crowdsourced smartphone battery temperatures to estimate inner-city air temperatures. Throughout his career, Remko has secured over 5 million euros in research funding, supervised numerous PhD candidates, and regularly organizes scientific seminars and conferences. Before joining TU Delft in 2020, he held significant positions at Wageningen University and had sabbaticals at prestigious institutions including Princeton University and Duke University. He is also a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Union, recognizing his contributions to remote sensing in hydrology.
