Dr. Remy Ambuhl

Biography

Dr. Rémy Ambühl is an Associate Professor of Medieval History at the University of Southampton, specializing in late Medieval Europe. His research primarily focuses on the intersection of politics, ethics, and warfare during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, particularly in France, England, and Burgundy. Dr. Ambühl has developed a significant interest in the laws of war and how they interact with politics and diplomacy. His work includes the study of prisoners of war, the surrender of garrisons, and urban communities. He initially aimed to become a secondary school teacher in Belgium but shifted his focus to historical studies after a burgeoning interest in history. He completed his BA at the University of Lille 3, followed by a DEA (MA) at the same institution, and later pursued his Doctorate at the University of St Andrews, funded by a Bullough scholarship. His dissertation, which explored prisoners of war in the Hundred Years War, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2013. Dr. Ambühl has held prestigious fellowships, including the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship and the Fernand Braudel IFER incoming Fellowship, which allowed him to further his research in Paris. His scholarly contributions include articles on the prisoners of Agincourt and collective surrender practices in medieval warfare.
