Dr. Remzi Celebi

Biography

Remzi Celebi is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Data Science at Maastricht University. His research lies at the intersection of Responsible AI, knowledge representation, and data curation, focusing on addressing real-world challenges in health and life sciences. His overarching goal is to develop innovative computational methods that empower individuals and organizations to leverage AI responsibly, ensuring transparency, fairness, and societal impact. He currently serves as the technical co-coordinator of the EU-funded AIDAVA project, a research innovation initiative with an €8 million budget that began in September 2022 and is expected to conclude in September 2026. The project aims to enhance data curation through automation by creating an AI-powered Virtual Assistant to empower patients to take greater control of their health data. He has gained considerable experience across diverse topics, including ontology-based data integration, knowledge discovery, representation learning, information extraction from unstructured data, and large language models (LLMs). His research vision centers on key areas such as understanding and improving personalized health by developing frameworks to build knowledge graphs that represent a person’s complete longitudinal health records, which can enhance the quality of knowledge and improve diagnostic assessments and treatment recommendations; accelerating scientific discovery by bridging symbolic reasoning with neural-based machine learning enhanced scientific discovery, utilizing neuro-symbolic AI systems for knowledge discovery, particularly in drug discovery and information retrieval; and promoting Responsible AI by exploring methods for making data and machine learning models transparent and reusable, thereby increasing the responsible use of AI and ensuring adherence to the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles.
