Dr. Rene Almeling

Biography

Rene Almeling is a professor at Yale University with expertise in sociology, history of medicine, and American studies. His research examines the intersection of biological bodies and cultural norms, particularly how these factors influence scientific knowledge and medical markets. Almeling is the author of 'Sex Cells', an award-winning book that explores the American market for egg and sperm donors. His latest work, 'GUYnecology', focuses on men's reproductive health and identifies gaps in medical knowledge and health policy related to reproductive politics. Almeling has conducted original surveys on Americans' attitudes toward genetic risk and women's experiences with in vitro fertilization. His scholarly articles have been published in prominent journals such as the American Sociological Review, Annual Review of Sociology, and Gender & Society. He has received funding from the National Science Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for his research and was awarded the Arthur Greer Memorial Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Research. Almeling holds courtesy appointments in American Studies, the Department of Health Policy and Management, and the Section of History of Medicine at Yale.
