Professor Dr. René Boomkens

Biography

René Boomkens is a professor of Cultural Studies, focusing specifically on cultural history and cultural philosophy at the University of Amsterdam. He studied philosophy, theology, and sociology at the same university and obtained his doctorate in 1998 with a dissertation titled 'Een Drempelwereld' at the University of Groningen. His research interests encompass modern urban culture, popular and everyday culture, pop music, globalization, neoliberalism, art, and the public sphere, alongside the history and contemporary relevance of cultural philosophy and aesthetics. Boomkens has published several significant works, including books on pop music, violence and media, urban modernity, globalization, and the crisis of universities. He is also involved in leading the Arts & Politics research group at the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA). Additionally, he has contributed extensively to various academic and public journals, fostering a broad orientation of contemporary philosophical practice.
