Biography

Rene Janssen leads the interdepartmental research group Molecular Materials Nanosystems at Eindhoven University of Technology. The group, comprising members from the Departments of Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, and Applied Physics, focuses on investigating and developing molecular and macromolecular (nano)structured materials with tailored physical properties. His research emphasizes functional molecular materials and nanosystems, particularly understanding the underlying mechanisms and physical phenomena that occur at the molecular level. Future applications include organic polymer solar cells, electrochemical cells, transistors, and diodes. Janssen has made significant contributions to the efficiency of polymer solar cells and is currently researching solar-to-fuel conversion processes using organic semiconductors that mimic natural photosynthesis. He has received multiple grants and awards for his work, including the Pioneer Grant from the Dutch Science Foundation and the NWO Spinoza Prize. His academic background includes studying Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology, obtaining his MSc in 1983 and his PhD in 1987. He has held various academic positions, becoming a full professor in Physical Organic Chemistry and later in Molecular Materials Nanosystems.
