Dr. René Repasi

Biography

René Repasi is a full professor of law at Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands and a visiting professor at the Global Studies Institute. His expertise lies in European law, focusing on the Economic and Monetary Union of the EU, internal market law, and the legitimacy of the European Union and its institutions. He defended his doctoral thesis in 2016 at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, examining the impact of the principle of supremacy of European law on the private international law of EU member states. Before his appointment as a full professor in 2021, he served as an associate professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam and directed the Erasmus Centre for Economic and Financial Governance. He studied law at the Universities of Heidelberg and Montpellier. Since February 2022, René Repasi has also been a Member of the European Parliament within the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D). He was re-elected during the European elections on July 9, 2024. He serves as the president of the German Social Democrats (SPD) group and is the coordinator for S&D in the Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI). He is also a full member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON).
