Biography

René van Donkelaar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) specializing in Cartilage Mechanics within the Orthopaedic Biomechanics research group. His research focuses on the mechanical behavior of cartilage, utilizing fundamental insights to establish a well-recognized computational model. This model links biochemical contents, such as the distributions of proteoglycans and collagen, to structural features like collagen fiber orientation and mechanical properties. Van Donkelaar's work aims to improve loading protocols for cartilage tissue engineering and to understand how adverse mechanical loading contributes to the progression of osteoarthritis, leading to the development of diagnostic tools. His research involves experimental work with cell cultures and explant systems, combined with numerical modeling based on his cartilage mechanics model. He completed his MSc in Human Health Sciences at Radboud University Nijmegen in 1994 and earned his PhD in 1999 from Maastricht University, focusing on skeletal muscle mechanics. Since 1998, he has been a faculty member at TU/e, where he has taken significant roles, including Program Director for the Bachelor program in Biomedical Engineering, promoting hands-on learning and curriculum redesign to enhance student engagement and personal development within the program.
