Biography

Renée Spencer is a professor and associate dean for faculty affairs at Boston University School of Social Work. Her work focuses on the role of supportive relationships among adults in promoting positive development for youth. With a special interest in youth mentoring, Spencer has been dedicated to identifying processes that foster helpful or harmful mentoring relationships, particularly for marginalized youth. Her research defines relational processes that contribute to successful youth mentoring, addressing issues such as premature relationship endings, under-engaged parents, and mentors' behaviors that can enhance or detract from the quality of relationships. Currently, her research is exploring these processes through grants from the U.S. Department of Education and the William T. Grant Foundation. Spencer has authored over 80 publications in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Adolescent Research and the Children and Youth Services Review. A faculty member at BUSSW since 2002, she has previously served as interim associate dean and research chair of the Human Behavior Department, and is an editorial board member for Qualitative Psychology and Applied Developmental Science.
