Renée R. Trilling specializes in language, literature, and culture of England during the pre-Conquest period, focusing particularly on early medieval literature. Her monograph, 'Aesthetics of Nostalgia: Historical Representation in Old English Verse' (Toronto, 2009), which won the International Society for the Study of Early Medieval England’s Book Award, examines the relationship between poetic form and historical consciousness in early English vernacular verse. Her current research engages with posthumanist ideas, neuroscience, quantum physics, and philosophy to explore the role of materiality in early medieval notions of subjectivity. Over her academic career, Professor Trilling has published articles focusing on topics such as Beowulf, Wulfstan, Ælfric’s hagiography, and early medieval medicine, with a particular concern for issues of gender, materiality, and literary form. Prior to joining the University of Toronto, she taught at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign from 2004 to 2023, where she also served as Editor of the 'Old English' section of 'JEGP: Journal of English and Germanic Philology'.
